Welcome to Wall Moss Observations! Welcome to the wall moss observation forum. If you have noticed a patch on a north wall, a green line along a brick joint, or a color shift after rain, you are invited to describe it here. Reading along is fine too, and you can add your own observations whenever you are ready.

We’re spending this year studying Canada! I previously shared our studies of:

Since everyone’s enjoying a behind-the-scenes glimpse at our month-long studies, I thought I would share our recent homeschool unit study about the province of Quebec. It was a month full of wonderful books and educational experiences!

OUR CURRICULUM

The bulk of our planning came from The Canadian Adventure Online Edition. I added some other elements to the curriculum, such as various read-aloud books and a related artist study.

READ-ALOUD BOOKS

As I’ve mentioned many times before, we start our day with Morning Time. This peaceful way of easing into our day is something I cherish. At this time, I read aloud from a variety of books. Since we were studying Quebec, I made sure that the books I chose were related to this province.

We read a few historical fiction books this month. The books we read were from the Our Canadian Girl series. The books we read included:

This historical fiction series is about a girl living in Montreal during the late 1800s. It tells the sad and challenging tale of living during the Smallpox epidemic.

F is for French: A New Quebec Alphabet was another great book. This series has been a wonderful addition to our homeschool studies! We end up learning so much additional information about the province! We read 1-2 letters of the alphabet daily throughout the month.

Canada Close Up: Quebec was a great nonfiction book that provided detailed information about the province. We read 1-2 chapters per week throughout the month.

We also read Lost in the Snow (a book from the Canadian Flyer Adventure Series).

My girls also enjoyed A New Life for Henri from the book On a Canadian Day.

VIDEOS

We watched many videos during the month. Most of the videos were provided by links through The Canadian Adventure Online Edition. The videos were beautiful and many times it felt like we were seeing and experiencing the sights of Quebec.

ARTIST STUDY

Every month, we study an artist who complements the province we’re exploring. This month, we studied Cornelius Krieghoff.

The four Cornelius Krieghoff paintings that we studied were:

  • Moccasin Seller Crossing the St. Lawrence at Quebec City
  • Fishing at Lake Memphremagog
  • The First Snow
  • Mail Boat Crossing

We discussed Cornelius Krieghoff’s artwork in detail and my girls memorized the names of each piece of art.

ACTIVITIES

We did various activities throughout the month. The girls did map work about the province. They also worked on memorizing and recognizing:

  • Quebec City – the capital of Quebec
  • The provincial flag
  • Provincial flower: Northern Blue Flag
  • The provincial bird: the Snowy Owl

We also made sure to cook some popular recipes in the region. Some of the delicacies we enjoyed were:

  • Tourtière (meat pie)
  • Sugar Pie
  • Poutine
  • Chômeur

Our Quebec unit study included tourtiere - French Meat Pie

Since Quebec produces 71% of the world’s supply of maple syrup, we spent some time studying how maple syrup is made. Our study included a few great books and a fabulous video on maple tree tapping.

I also couldn’t resist splurging on these delicious maple candies. There’s nothing like them!
As usual, we wrapped up our study of the province with collages. I had gathered tourist guides, and my girls cut out pictures that they felt depicted what they had learned about Quebec. It’s always an enjoyable and educational activity.

Our month-long Quebec unit study was fabulous. We learned so much from the experience! I can’t wait to study our next province… Ontario!
